The development of a compassionate character requires the use of gentle gestures, offers of comfort, attempts to ease the other’s suffering, understanding. Other words that come to mind include human, sympathetic, merciful.
Medically trained persons, such as nurses or nurses’ aides, are a good model to follow or those to step up to give aid in the midst of tragedy, such as Hurricane Katrina or the tsunami in Indonesia or the tsunami after the earthquake in Japan. These individuals are good examples of people equipped with compassion. Using them as a model will make developing your compassionate character much easier.
A short example:
Today Matt had come home from school early with a headache and fever. Grandma’s gently placed hand on his forehead offered him the comfort and sense of care that he needed to feel better.
As Grandma gently hummed one of his favorite songs, Matt slowly dropped off to sleep and slept the rest of the day. Grandma was just who Matt needed today.
